Hello from across the pond! I’m a little over a month in, and life is finally starting to figure itself out here in Budapest. Getting here was an interesting experience. After leaving behind a family and girlfriend in tears, while I tried to hold them back myself, I boarded my plane to Chicago without anything too eventful happening. From there, the flight to Heathrow was fun. Sitting next to a little girl who liked to kick and a middle school English teacher from the Chicago area made for some interesting conversation and not much sleep. The flight ended up being slightly delayed, which meant I had to run from one plane to another, just barely making my flight to Budapest. Finally, I touched down in Budapest, and two hours and countless bridal shower groups in the customs line later, I was happy to make it to my new home, even if my luggage was left in London. After a few days of getting over jet lag and a cold, I was off to Gypsy Camp! We work with a local ministry that runs an after-school program and shares Jesus with local Roma children. Since I’m new to the team and country, I had no official duty besides floating around and helping out where needed. We played games like Ga-ga ball and a sport that was a cross of baseball and cricket. There were camp fires, gypsy dancing, English lessons, and Bible stories. Every day was topped off with a swim down at Lake Balaton. As I look to the future (6-8 months). I will be investing heavily on language school and adjusting to the Hungarian culture. I always knew Hungarian was difficult, but it is not until you start learning the language that you realize how difficult it is. It is incredibly fun being challenged in this new way though. I also have the opportunity to be a part of a team who are starting an English Club in one of the surrounding suburbs. Helping kids practice English of course, but the even more exciting thing is we will be asking a “tough” question that will make kids think about their views on different issues. This gives the opportunity to share the unique world view that faith in Christ gives us. For now, there are a few specific things you can join me in praying about as I continue getting settled in here:- Prayers
- Starting Hungarian classes
- Getting my residence permit
- English club and the opportunities that arise from it.
