Old Updates: The One About the First 90 Days Working at HQ

Fall 2023

Wait, what month is it??

An update on the happenings this fall (spoiler alert, it's been busy!)

Going forward we are planning to try a few new things with update letters. We found a new way to share prayer requests with you all, so we are excited to try that out! But for now…

What is going on:

90 days in office-  It has been a little over three months into the new position for Daniel and in some ways it has been slow and some ways it has been a fire hose. In his new position, Daniel wears a lot of hats as he helps oversee how everything is running globally. His goal is to make things run as smoothly as possible for the missionaries on the field so that they can focus on their job of sharing the gospel. Right now that includes working on quite a bit of processes and policy to get it all running as best as possible and keep it that way.

Every Wednesday, Daniel has been sitting down and learning about the church planting arm of OMS and all of the work going on around the world, as well as the budgeting process for all of that work. After years just focused on Hungary, it has truly been amazing seeing how God is working in different areas around the world.
Missio Nexus conference-  Daniel was able to attend an annual missions conference in Orlando at the end of September. It consisted a lot more of the “business” side of missions, but it was an encouraging time and he was able to meet with people in person he had only ever communicated with through email.
Church Planting Training- Daniel had the chance to attend the first of three sessions that OMS is hosting around church planting. Curtis Sargent shared about Disciples-Making Movements (DMM) and church planting through simple church methods. They then spent an hour and half talking about their experiences with church planting and what principles we could use in our ministries. Daniel was particularly interested in this training as it is apart of the principles we use in the simple church we attend here in Greenwood. The next session will include a panel discussion around church planting.
Family updates:
Apartment Moving-  We have moved onto OMS’s campus into one of the apartments, and Daniel is enjoying the quick walk to work in the mornings.
Arlo is Growing-  Arlo is growing- A part of moving into a new place is setting everything up, which is mostly fun. However Arlo is moving and pulling himself up so much now that now every edge or furniture is a potential hazard, so that has been interesting…. Thankfully, we had a friend come down and visit and he helped with some of the baby proofing.
1.) Arlo has thoroughly enjoyed taking things out of boxes 2.) Our cats have also really enjoyed having their tower from Hungary back in a window 3.) Arlo very quickly adapted with his favorite toys in the new space 4.) Arlo is the biggest help with laundry!
Prayers:
Doctor Appointment-  Amanda will be traveling up to Chicago for a doctor's appointment. We are praying for clarity and a good connection with the doctor.
Wisdom and Discernment-  Daniel is working on some strategic and structural plans for OMS, and we are praying that God would make clear the best structures to put in place and an understanding of implementation.
Local Community-  We are praying for the neighbors around us and looking for people who would be open to hearing the gospel.
Support Raising-  Living here in the States is much more expensive than Budapest. Please pray with us that God brings people alongside that will help support us in what God is doing.
Joys:
State Fair-  After a few years away, coming back to the state fair was a joy. It was also strange seeing how much had changed. We stuck to our “strengths” as a couple, Amanda dug into her own history of showing pigs and 4-H to shared some of the “behind the scenes” of the fair while Daniel shared all the fried foods that were worth purchasing.
Niagara Falls-  We will mostly share photos from this trip, but it was our first experience of travel without Arlo and the first time seeing the falls for Daniel. While the separation was difficult it was an enjoyable time to be together and we discovered some delicious Italian and the falls themselves were stunning.
1.) We were both blown away by the beauty and power of Niagara 2.) Amazingly, we found Hungarian chimney cakes in Canada! 3.) Again, amazing! 4.) We had fun renting bikes and riding around the little town of Niagara on the Lake.
